Butterfly Pea

Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) can be cultivated in semi-arid and sub-humid tropics and therefore fits perfect in the Thai climate. This soil improver is a high-quality, protein-rich legume and referred as a real protein bank.

This species has several variaties and we grow the blue, 5 layer flower.

In the right environment the plant gives flowers every day and year round. This is quite important since there are more than 13.000 flowers needed to get one kg dried flowers.

The flowers are used as tea, colourant in food, drink, paint and ink and in cosmetics. Many studies confirm the importance of the plant for applications such as natural cure for microbial diseases, memory enhancement, antioxidant, antitumor activity and antiaging.

The blue flowers are rich in proanthocyanidins.  These flavanoids are internationally recognized as the most effective natural antioxidants against free radicals and it has been proven to be 30~50 times more effective than vitamins C and E in terms of free radical scavenging.
